"The clearer the feeling, the blurrier the image,” said the artist. Liu Dan has a penchant for depicting "uncertain" subjects. Similar to the traditional literati painting, gong shi (Scholar's Rocks) are usually found in his reminiscent painting. In this work, he used a very dry brush to make small stroke; often the marks are so thin that the texture of the paper below is evident. Looking into detail, you will find ink in many shades, from deep black to palest grey. The spare use of both line and ink making his works distinguish from the mainstream.
